Buy Jersey Local

What is Buy Jersey Local?

At Dearborn Market, we believe that where a product is made is just as important as how it is made. We are so proud to be located in New Jersey and take special pride in the hand-selection and quality of the local products we sell to our customers. To celebrate this, we invite you to “buy local” all summer long, and join us at September’s Eat Local Festival, where NJ producers will sample their products and share their stories!

How can I “buy local” all summer at Dearborn Market?

Dearborn Market will be featuring local producers in-store during the whole summer! You can “buy local” by looking out for products that are labeled with our “Buy Jersey Local” logo. Click here to see which local producers will be featured in Dearborn Market!

Bifulco Farms

When Frank Paul Luccarelli purchased Dearborn Farms in 1925, he quickly became friends with Umberto Bifulco, a fellow Italian immigrant farmer from Naples.  In 1970, the Bifulco family moved their farming business to South Jersey and created U. Bifulco & Sons Farms Inc. Eventually the business grew under Bert and Charlotte, delivering their produce on their own trucks, U, G. M. Transport Inc., and later added Bifulco’s Four Seasons Cold Storage Inc., to keep their produce fresh.

Their current crops include cabbage, green leafy vegetables such as swisschard, dandelion, escarole, rappini and arrugula and herbs such as dill and parsley.  Farming has long been an honored tradition in the Bifulco Family and has been passed down for three generations. Today, Bert’s sons are working to expand their father’s produce business with the hope that some of their children will become the fourth generation to continue this farming tradition.

Overdevest Nurseries

John and Jean Overdevest founded Overdevest nursery in 1952. What started out as an immigrant’s dream, soon developed into a small operation specializing in Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Dogwoods, and Japanese Maples.  With the energy and determination that is typical of immigrants, the nursery expanded and prospered.  The next generation, Ed and his wife Gail, have continued in this same spirit as the nursery has undergone considerable expansion and diversification over the last 30 years.

Over 1400 varieties of shrubs, trees, vines, and perennials are grown on a total of 290 acres. The largest and newest location, the “Roadstown” farm was purchased in 1988 and encompasses approximately 230 acres.

Ed was among the first in New Jersey to install a tailwater recovery system, treating and recycling irrigation runoff from overhead sprinklers for reuse. Overdevest estimates that by using this system her reuses 80 million gallons of water a year. He also installed micro-irrigation on his container nursery stock, giving him the ability to direct water and nutrients to the root zone area. Many nursery owners choose overhead irrigation rather than micro-irrigation because of the expense, labor and management involved with micro-irrigation systems.

In 2002, Overdevest launched their product line, Garden Splendor® and then the Footprints™ line in 2008, which are both sold through independent garden centers on the east coast, which Dearborn Market has carried for over 7 years.
