Inviting Birds to Your Backyard
Provide Food - offer a variety of plants, so that fruits, nuts, and seeds are available at different seasons of the year. Try to have something flowering in your yard as many months as possible.
Provide Cover - dense vegetation to protect birds from weather and predators. Evergreen shrubs and trees are a year round source.
Provide Nesting - plant shrubs and trees for crotch nesting birds, such as robins, blue jays, and finches. Old dead trees for cavity nesters such as, woodpeckers. Chickadees, swallows, and bluebirds use abandoned woodpecker homes since they are unable to excavate for themselves.
Provide Water - install a pond with a waterfall or a birdbath with a dripper. Birds need water for drinking and bathing. The sound of water will attract birds.
